While there are a handful of mainstream manufacturers still churning out light general aviation aircraft and a variety of smaller boutique builders, their products are not within easy financial reach for most Americans. It's not a new situation but is it one that manufacturers see as tenable long term?
Cheapest Operating Cost Aircraft
The A350 XWB engine benefits from an entirely new design that notably delivers the lowest Specific Fuel Consumption (SFC) of any large aero-engine in commercial aviation today, directly contributing to lower fuel burn at the aircraft level.

Starting in 2009, GAMA and other aviation organizations worked with the FAA to address some of the burden of certification leading to passage of the Small Airplane Revitalization Act of 2013 which sought to ensure that smaller recreational airplanes could be designed and certified under less complex regulatory requirements
than heavier, higher performance aircraft. The resulting amendments to FAA Part 23 requirements went into effect in 2018. According to Plane & Pilot magazine, the price of a new Cessna 172 was $12,500 in 1970 and the average salary in the United States was $6,186.

"The statute introduced in 1994 has helped, but if you look at the statements that we've been public about in the past, 20% to 30% of the price of an aircraft is simply related to the manufacturer self-insuring against product liability.
That's a real, key factor in prices." Textron Aviation did not make anyone available for comment, but GA manufacturers have frequently argued that even the legacy designs they sell - Bonanzas, Skyhawks, Cherokees - are not the same airplanes they were decades ago despite their appearance.
With trip costs being reduced by 25% versus previous generation aircraft, and seating capacities ranging from 300 to over 425 seats in service today, the A350 Family has the lowest operating cost per seat of any widebody aircraft.

The other two-thirds of the students instructors say are younger but investing in flying for career purposes. It's a fact of life reflected in the sales of GA aircraft which manufacturers increasingly pitch to flight schools rather than individuals.
Among the biggest orders for GA aircraft in 2020 came from ATP Flight School in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida which took delivery of eight new Textron-Cessna 172s. Such is the market that most of the pilots I spoke with are not even aware of new airplane sticker prices.
Instead, their focus is on the used market. A local flight instructor informed me that two of his students were pleased to be able to purchase a lightly used 1970s vintage Cessna 172 for about $120,000.
The A350 can connect almost any two cities worldwide thanks to its unique range capability. It currently flies the world's longest commercial route, New York to Singapore, while also being used on domestic flights in regions such as Japan.

When Textron Aviation announced the production of a 75th anniversary edition of the Beechcraft Bonanza earlier this month, it reminded aviation enthusiasts that the piston-single classic is the longest continuously produced aircraft in history. But the 2022 75th anniversary Bonanza's likely million-dollar price tag is also a reminder that, in the eyes of many pilots, general aviation aircraft manufacturers are pricing themselves out of the market.
In the 1980s the industry was also ravaged by product liability lawsuits that crippled manufacturing and significantly drove up costs. The General Aviation Revitalization Act of 1994, provided relief to GA manufacturers, limiting product liability for products 18 years old or older, but litigation has still had a severe impact, Hennig says.
Aircraft manufacturers frequently cite the cost and complexity of FAA certification as a reason for high retail costs and the relatively low degree of innovation in certified aircraft. While there have been some airframe and engine improvements to classic designs, most innovation has come with advances in navigation, communications and pilot-assistance avionics.
Although these are welcome additions to the market, they have not substantially increased the volume of aircraft being manufactured or significantly spurred demand. Without demand and increased sales volume, the unit prices of GA aircraft will continue to rise, further culling the population of those able and willing to spend the money to buy new aircraft.
At Lee Airport, flight instructors told me that about one-third of their students are learning to fly for recreation or personal transportation. They tend to be middle-aged, in part because the cost of flying and purchasing airplanes requires mid-career affluence.
This provides from 15% to 25% lower seat-mile cost compared to competing products. The A350-1000 is a large widebody operating at lower costs than smaller competitor variants, increasing profitability for airlines worldwide while maintaining flexibility for operations.
"In aviation we have a long history of focusing on the price. In the boating magazines and social media, it's rare that someone writes about the cost of owning a boat. They tend to focus on where a cool, fun place is to go and dock, new equipment, and safety stories.
Then you open up an aviation magazine and the story is about not getting into aviation because it's expensive. I think we, as an industry, can talk about [cost] smarter." Piper's venerable Cherokee, the latest edition of which - the Piper 100i - debuted at the recent Sun 'n Fun airshow in Florida, cost about $13,000 in 1970. Today, the price for one ranges from $259,000 to $285,000.
Chinese-owned Cirrus Aircraft has only been making production piston-singles since 1995, but the list price for its parachute-equipped, fixed-gear SR-22 was $755,000 in 2020. "In 1970 a Cessna 172 was 1.3 times the average salary in the U.S.
and a Bonanza was 5 times the average. Today it is 6 times the average salary for a 172 and 14 times the average salary for a Bonanza. Anyone else wonder how [the manufacturers] are staying in business?”

Electrification could potentially reduce the cost of aircraft/flying. New electric GA aircraft like Pipistrel's Velis Electro promise low operating costs but have yet to be FAA certified or to prove their cost claims. And though categorized as a simple Light Sport Aircraft pitched at the training market, the two-seat, fixed gear Velis Electro still stickers for the equivalent of $223,000.
And yet private flying remains somewhat robust. There are over 200,000 general aviation aircraft and about 500,000 GA pilots in the U.S. generating $39 billion in direct economic output and 7.6 million jobs according to the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.
For now, it's self-sustaining. "We have certainly heard concerns about the price of a new aircraft," says Jens Hennig, vice president of operations at the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA). "Aviation has never been a high margin industry.
Our manufacturers attempt to sell airplanes at the cost of manufacturing with a slim margin to enable future investment in the product." "I think it's unfair to say we're making exactly the same aircraft we were making two or three decades ago," Hennig asserts.
"There's been a big [digital] evolution to the flight deck and that's a value-add. You get additional capability and value and price are always tied together." Hennig points out that general aviation manufacturing is a low volume affair as well.
The high-water mark for sales of light aircraft in the U.S. was 1978, a year in which approximately 18,000 light single and twin-engine aircraft were sold. According to GAMA, 1,324 and 1,312 piston aircraft were sold in 2019 and 2020 respectively.
